When I hold the wheel down it goes to the next file. When I mentioned being connected to the computer to use its software, I was speaking of those features it provides none of which have anything to do with it when it's not connected. I guess you could stretch and say updates might concern themselves with the player itself but so far I haven't received any or learned of any when I checked.

If you hold the right edge of the navigation circle down, and keep it pressed down, it'll fast forward through the current file. It is true that it won't retain your place in a file if you jump to another file.
