Hi Donald. Firstly, you will need a cassette player with either left and right phono sockets or a headphone socket. There is a free programme called CDEX which includes with in it a recorder but if you want to split the contents of the tape into separate tracks then you will need an audio editor such as Gold Wave or Total Recorder or Sound Forge ETC. These are also recorders and will do what you want with ease. If you don't want to split the file into tracks then the CDEX recorder will do fine. When you decide what you wish to do and what programme you want to use then let us know and we can help. The problem is, until you decide what you want to do it is difficult to give step by step instructions as each programme has different controls and shortcut keys and although some on the list may be familiar with all the well known editors, some like myself are only familiar with Gold Wave and not any of the others. If your end goal is to burn the contents on your cassette to a CD then there is a piece of equipment that will do that for you without having to use your PC but I don't know anything more about it or what it is called as I've had no experience with it. Perhaps some on this list though can help there.
