You oculd always use CDex (free), goldwave (not free), total recorder (not free), mp3 direct cut (free), and many more to accomplish the same task.

If you choose to use Audacity, then you may want to chekc out the tutorial from:
http://vip.chowo.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/jaws/Audacity-1.3.7-Guide.html
This is asuming that you use JAWS. If you do not use JAWS, then the expirience may be a little different.

Timothy

Try and update to Audacity 1.3.7. This is more accessible.

I have just bought a USB tape deck to convert tape to mp3.
The software that came with it was Audacity and I am having problems with
navigating the interface.

Is there software that Can be used by a vision impaired person?
