Dean, Gary and Walter, thanks for the helpful replies! The scroll lock in the view menu was indeed unchecked. It's fairly likely that I did control l. Maybe I was trying to open a file in winamp... I'm sure everyone has inadvertently done such things. Goodness knows I will do them again. It is also true that maximizing screens helps. Thanks again! Peter
