Well, you can customize the keyboard shortcuts by pressing ? (shift+/). You can then search for the action you want to perform, such as arm track for recording then add a keystroke. After that you can press that keystroke to arm the track for recording. You can then press CTRL+R to start recording.

Reaper is fairly accessible. The good news is even if you can't afford it
the shareware won't truly expire; it will display a nag screen that you
can't dismiss for a few seconds. The screen will appear once daily until
you've registered.
