Hi all,
Just thought I'd inform listers that there's a podcast out there on new Jaws
11 features. There really isn't anything interesting just the same old FS
fluff and no real substance. They are introducing something they are calling
"research it," which essentially acts like a hotkey to launch Wiktionary and
other data gathering tools. You press a hotkey, type in a word you're
interested in defining, and you hit enter. Jaws will place the definitions
in a buffer and you can arrow down and read the definitions. What a waste of
an SMA as this is essentially what I'm doing right now when I use Word web
and control tab to wikipedia and so forth. This is also what I do when I use
WinKey to launch wikipedia to find various terms. This is also what I do by
simply creating a hot key to a folder containing all my favorite WebPages
for the day such as Ny Times, weather, and news. This is also what anyone
can do by running a Google search. This thing sounds like it will go the way
of the jaws speech and sounds manager that was suppose to change our lives
forever. Now that I think of it, is it just me or is FS pretty much run out
of ideas and repackaging existing ways of doing things and selling it to us
as "new features?" This is all very disappointing.
Oh yeah, they also released something called Word index. It takes a page and
groups many similar words into a column by which one can down arrow through
the list and verify that the word jaws has come up 20 times, the workd dog
has come up 12 times, and the word junk has come up 1000 times. I don't even
know what to say about this. Apparently this feature in this SMA hit is
going to help us determine that we've used the same word repeatedly and we
should go back and edit our document to use the word a few less times.
There's some other feature that will be of interest to about, hmm, 2 or 3 of
us. It something about sound coming through multiple sound cards and so
forth--didn't really care, but it might be of some interest to PC audio
listers. The relevant info can be found at 37:34 on the podcast.
The other earth shattering new feature is that during a jaws tandem session
the person accessing another's computer remotely will be able to hear the
other's person's sound effects. No comment necessary.
I didn't really care to listen any further, but check out the podcast for
yourselves as it might be of some interest to you.
HTH
