Naomi,

I can't tell from this query how familiar you are with PDF concepts. It sounds as though this particular file is an image file, which requires additional support beyond Adobe Reader and your screenreader.

First, make sure you have the accessible version of the latest release of Adobe Reader, which I think is now up to 9. If the PDF document is a text file, this program will take you through the steps for making it accessible.

However, if Adobe goes through the conversion process and reports something like, "Empty document," it suggests you have an image file. In that case, you will need to perform OCR, optical character recognition, on it. If you have a Kurzweil 1000 or similar reading device, it will be able to perform this task for you. Otherwise, you will need to obtain an OCR application such as OmniPage or others that have been recommended on this and other lists.

With all this in mind, you might want to explain the specific problem you have so that someone here might help. Keep in mind that this may not be a suitable subject for this list. The moderator is sure to let us know! If not, find a list that deals with your screenreader.

Subject: My computer won't read pdf.

Hay guys, I tried to open an attachment on an e-mail that is in pdf format. Jaws said it was processing the document but nothing happened. Does anyone know why?

Naomi
