High Tom,
I think the change took place in the mid 80's when CD's replaced 8 track tapes.
Also at the same time, you couldn't buy music on open reels anymore either.
To me, the open real tapes sounded a whole lot better then 8 track and cassette tapes put together.

In my opinion, I don't think they'll ever be able to re-create that sound they had back then as the world of "digital equipment" just doesn't allow for it! But even a lot of the music of the seventies still had that good, wide, stereo; I don't know when it changed..and don't really know why it changed!
