hi joe,
and a happy new year to you too. I know you've had a lot of replies but
here's my 2 cents worth.
I'm one of the unlucky ones who had problems with total recorder (which was
one of many I tried)
there's a freeware program called Donar MP3 Recorder (you can google it or
use this link: http://www.donarzone.com/)

i needed a solution to record phone calls. i started out thinking it would
be easy to find a skype call recorder that worked reliably, so i planned to
use 'skype out' calls with a skype-specific recorder. i found all the skype
software recorders gave me trouble, so i went back to using my normal phone
line with an inexpensive phone interface that connected to my pc microphone
jack, etc. and used this program (donar) -- it is different from your
requirement, but you can select the audio input with donar, so you should be
able to record your skype calls straight out of the audio card. it's pretty
easy to use, and easy enough to try and discard if it doesn't do what you
want. (and i have found it rock solid).

hope this helps.
cheers,
rashad
