Just to be clear, the tax here is that in order to get a phone that
supports Talks or another screen reader, we have to purchase a phone
that requires a data plan. If a sighted person bought the same phone
then they'd have to get the same plan and pay the same amount. It isn't
that you don't get anything for the $25 a month or that sighted people
don't have to pay the same amount. The issue here is that we don't have
a choice to get a phone that doesn't require the data plan.

Hi, John! Oh, a "blindness tax!" That extra $25 a month is
ridiculous. I just paid the initial license fee for Talks and the
phone from (then Cingular), and that was it. And to make sure I got
updates, I bought a copy of talks from a dealer.--Matthew Chao

Hello Matthew,
Verizon Wireless has phones that has Talks on them.]
But I don't like the way they charge people for them.
You have to have some kind of a plan that they will charge you an
extra $25 a month.
To me, that's more money then what it's worth.
But that's another horse of another collar, or however the saying
goes.SMILES
My best regards.

Hello. I use Comcast, and as far as I know, can't be done. I am
thoroughly disgusted that we're being left out regarding
accessibility of set-top boxes. It's like the old days of
cellphones; you could use the phone to call people by dialing, but
you couldn't use the other 90% of the phone's features. For that
reason, I went from Verizon to At&T because they had Talks.--Matthew

High Hank,
I am still talking to Dish Network Direct TV and all of the cable
companies about that.
Ok they're coming out with new satellite dish receivers and cable
converters that can do allot of cool things.
But if you can't see your TV screen to take advantage of those cool
things, what good is it doing you the blind consumer?
This is why I feel that we are being left out of the market place
when it comes to something like this.
But if allot of us blind people tell Dish Network Direct TV and the
cable companies that this is a must for us, they mite listen to us.
But for now, the only way for us to control our satellite dish
receivers, is with and through our computers.
I don't know this to be true about cable converters yet, I am still
doing my homework on that one.
My best regards.

Wow. I think there was a recording program made to capture from a
slingbox, whether it still works any more I don't know, but the
guys who made Replay AV used to sell it.

Hello all list members,
I just heard this from: www.dishnetwork.com
in about a month or so, they are releasing a new HD receiver
that has the Sling Box built in to it.
This eliminates the need for a separate Sling Box to be used
with your currant HD receiver.
This is good news for those of us that like to record TV shows
and watch them on our computers.
But don't take my word for it, check it out on the link above.
My best regards.
John.
