Hi John. I'm guessing here, but the San Disc drive may not be totally compatible with the NLS player. People have reported problems with this brand of drive. I tried hooking up an SD reader to my player, and it sort of worked. I was able to play part of an NLS book, but then the player would say I had reached the end of it. I didn't get a cartridge error, though.
People have reported good results with the Kingston brand of flash drive, and I purchased a LEXAR 4 gig drive that works fine with the player. Keep in mind, however, that the player is mainly designed to work with the cartridges designed for it. You can get blank 2 gig cartridges from http://www.aph.org These are more expensive than flash drives, and they don't hold as much. I've decided to use them, because I know they work with the NLS player, and they fit into the front of it with little effort. If you have any other questions, let me know.
