I just use an old computer that has been retired from other service. Right now it's a Compaq Desk Pro from 2000 running windows 98. Just enough computer to to plug in an S-video card (for video) and run winamp and and NIC drivers. With a wireless keyboard, it makes a perfect setup.

Subject: Looking for Recommendations for PC-to-A/V

I've tried everything from a $30 FM transmitter from a chain store, to
something purported to wirelessly and digitally transmit audio from
any output to any input, even tried a set-top box that lets you browse
your audio media collection over your in-house network, but was
totally inaccessible and couldn't handle streaming. I'm even
considering buying an el-cheapo netbook for the sole purpose of
delivering A/V from my network-attached storage box to my stereo and
television, except that now, I seem to have been jumped over by the
technology because the only thing available for the interface to the
stereo or TV uses an HDMI and neither my stereo nor my television
supports that. Is there a device I can stream to from the PC which
will send audio out to my stereo (never mind the video for now), or a
device I can connect to the stereo which will allow browsing of my
media storage at that end? Is a cheap netbook a good solution for
this? Should I consider maybe a diskless netbook that boots something
over the in-house network and gives me access that way? I can't
believe in this day and age this is so hard. All suggestions welcome,
except the "go soak your head" variety.
