I had to read the note on the download page a couple of times because I
couldn't believe it, but after reading it, I didn't bother downloading the
program. We've grown to expect poor treatment from Microsoft and from the
bad boy of the assistive technology industry, but I didn't expect it from
K-NFB Reading Technology.

Yup! It's a pile o' crap! I downloaded it and tried it out and it seemed
very inaccessible for the few minutes I tried it before it crashed!

K-NFB Reading Technology, a company which you would think should have the
blind as their highest priority, has released the long-awaited Blio
eReader today. After it was announced in January with glowing promises
that it would bring access to a million books to blind readers, K-NFB
Reading Technology, a joint venture of the National Federation of the
Blind and Kurzweil Technologies, has released a version of the Blio
eReader that is not accessible to screen readers. They promise on the
download page that an accessible version of Blio will be available in
October, but they've missed so many release dates, I'll believe it when
it happens. How can we expect companies to release accessible software
from day one when a company in which one of the partners is a national
blindness organization doesn't even follow this principle?
To make matters worse, I just got an email message from K-NFB Reading
Technology telling me about all of the books I can read with the Blio
eReader. It reminds me of all of those messages from AMAZON.COM about
the Kindle PC software.
