Well, if it is anything like mine was, the thing finally died on me, making it necessary to go buy another drive. I replaced it with a USB cd/cvd drive, and now everything works like a charm.

Are you sure the disk you're inserting doesn't already have something on it?
When I use a disk that turned into a coaster by mistake, I get a similar
error.
