I'm also wondering if you burn the file back onto CD with Windows Media player [in which it was ripped originally, if you may not be able to rip the file in a an unprotected format. CDs are so cheap nowadays that it may be something to try.

Can't you play the file and then record it in a recorder e.g. Audacity? It's not quite the same but this might supply a solution?
