Just out of curiosity unplug the USB speakers and check to see what the default card is. then plug them back in and check again. I'm wondering what is changing when they are plugged in.
what is the make and model of the speakers

That is correct. They are USB speakers with an in-built sound card. They have three buttons on the front, one to lower the sound, one to increased the sound and the third to mute. Unfortunately they adjust the volume of the internal card rather than the USB speakers. I could probably solve this problem by making the speakers rather than the internal card the default sound card, but that would also cause sounds which by default I want to come through the internal card to come through the speakers.

I have a lead from the internal card to my hi-fi system which I use for listening to music etc. I use the USB speakers for JAWS. I can adjust the JAWS volume by going into volume settings in Windows, but it would be nice if I could also use the buttons on the
speakers.

I am aware that if I made the speakers the default sound card, I could force programs such as Winamp to use the internal card, but I would need to do that for every media player and I didn't really want to have to go down that track since some players don't provide
that option anyway.

Barry Chapman

So that I am understanding you. Your USB sound card has its own external
Volume control that seems to be adjusting the internal card?---

Hi Robert,

It isn't the default card and I don't want it to be, because if I choose a
listen link on the Internet, I want it to come through
the other card. The question is, is there any way of having the volume
control buttons control other than the default card.

Thanks,
Barry Chapman

Subject: Advice needed on configuring two sound cards

Can anyone help.

On my desktop PC, I have two sound cards. The default card I use for
listening to music etc. The second I use for listening to
JAWS. No problems so far.

The USB speakers used for JAWS have buttons to turn the volume up and
down. The problem is that rather than adjusting the volume of
those speakers, they adjust the volume of the other sound card. Using
Windows XP, does anyone know how I can select which sound
card they control.

Thanks,
Barry Chapman
