Here's a puzzler for you puzzle fans. I have a Firewire audio
interface that I use for everything except Windows sounds and speech
output. When I start Windows XP, the Windows sounds come through the
default audio device, an SB Audigy sound card, but sometimes, not
always. After the system startup is complete and things have settled
down, I manually remove some registry keys for ASIO support of the SB
card because they conflict and interfere with those of the Firewire
device, a Mackie 820I mixer. Sometimes when I switch on the Firewire
interface, the Windows sounds switch to that interface of their own
accord, and sometimes they don't. I will know instantly whether the
switch has happened if I don't hear the sound for "A USB or Firewire
device has been connected" because I normally turn the Mackie on with
all its volumes down, thus not allowing any sound to come through,
particularly feedback from a microphone. I can usually get them to
stay put on the Audigy SB card by turning the Firewire interface off,
waiting a few seconds to hear the Windows sound indicating a Firewire
or USB device has been disconnected after the Windows sounds have
magically moved back to the Audigy, then turning the Firewire device
back on. Sometimes it takes two or three tries to get the Windows
sounds to stay put on the SB, sometimes they never move at all. Any
clue as to why this happens in the first place, and possibly how to
prevent it from happening?

Thanks in advance.
