Hi, Larry:

First off, being an experienced user doesn't necessarily imply knowing
a lot about hardware. Hey, I consider myself an experienced user of
locks and keys, but could I make one, or pick one? Not on your life!
LOL! Same goes for fridges, stoves, light bulbs, etc. (LOL).

But, to your problem ...

If you go to Control Panel--this is XP, now--and select System, then
find the Hardware tab, tab to the Device Manager button and press it,
then tab to the tree view of hardware, you'll most likely find your
USB hardware at the bottom of the list. I don't know of any hardware
that begins with letters after U. If you open the tree view, you'll
find at least one USB bridge, and ports defined for each defined
bridge. You might have more than one if you have many USB ports on
your system. Make note of the model number of the bridge, then Google
it. That's probably the best way I know to determine what version of
USB is supported by a bridge+port combination.
