Hello.

I think the quality of your MIDI output depends more on your soundcard than on what piece of software you use to play the file. The reason for this is that MIDI uses patches that are loaded into your card's firmware. You can certainly change these if you want to, at least on decent cards, but how you go about this will depend on your setup.

Winamp plays midi files fine; that's what I use. Don't expect a difference in quality though.

I know little about devices which play midi files. However, one thing I know with certainty is how much I dislike the way that Windows plays midis.

I am therefore putting a link in this message to a midi file. And I hope that someone on this list will download this file and play it on a good player, record it with GoldWave or Total recorder as an mp3, and send it back to me as an email attachment. In this way, I can hear how this file sounds when played with a quality midi player. Please tell me the type of player and its approximate cost in U.S. dollars.
