To add a station, I use the menus. You can hit the alt key which opens the menu bar, arrow over to favorites and down arrow to open the menu. Within the menu, there's an add to favorites choice.

What's weird is that when I activated the "favorites" button directly, not with the shortcut key, I didn't see that add choice, which as you note, is the one that's right under the cursor when you hit the shortcut key.
