if I were to rename the .ts to .mpg will audio and video still be intact?

Hi,
The .ts format is the transport stream. If you record standard definition content, just rename the file as mpg and it should work. To analize what video and audio formats a .ts file contains, use mediainfo. I usually don't convert ts because I don't want to lose video quality, but to do that probably the software freevideo converter can do the job, or in alternative you can use auto mkv.
