Dane thinks that all anyone needs is what he needs. I wrote to the list a few months ago asking for a portable recorder that could append and overwrite, and he unhelpfully wrote back that I don't need those features. Apparently he didn't communicate this pearl of wisdom to the makers of ProTools, Sonar, Sound Forge, or any other professional recorder since they all include the ability to append, punch in etc. If only they knew he didn't need these things, they could have saved a lot of time. But if you can get beyond hissnarky attitude, he actually does make some valid points in that post. Total Recorder is an excellent alternative player, and it only costs I think $12 for the standard edition. VLC plays more filetypes than Winamp. I always keep a copy on my system, and whenever I have a file no other player will play, VLC seems to do it. And just because Winamp won't be updated doesn't mean we have to stop using it any time soon. In fact, even newer filetypes might be playable if someone made a plug-in. A couple other good things about Winamp. The Pacemaker plug-in that allows you to change the pitch and/or tempo of a file. I also have a script for customizable rewind and fast forward that allows me to easily jump back and forth by increments of any size from a couple seconds to several minutes by just hitting control plus left or right arrow. Foobar2000 is pretty good. I can't stand iTunes. If I didn't have an iPod touch, I wouldn't even have that piece of junk on my PC, although it's not terrible with the blindTunes scripts if you have JFW. ----- Original Message ----- From: "goshawk on horseback" <goshawk_on_horseb...@fastmail.co.uk>

for a start, whilst you may like all that looking things up and customizing stuff, not everyone does. at least with winamp, the keyboard shortcuts were
already there, and could all be found in the menus, with out having to go
through all of that looking up stuff.
winamp will play so many more different file types/formats than iTunes, plus
many more can be added with extra plugins. this is great if one is an
obscure format fiend, or has collections of stuff in many different formats,
such as mod, xm, s3m for example.
I really don't see why you have to be so very harsh on those of us who like
winamp! there is really no need for that sort of attitude.

Okay so are you just saying that or have you actually tried and explored
other players.

For example I've just looked up Windows Media Player Keyboard Shortcuts
using my friend Google and discovered over 200 keyboard shortcuts.

I know VLC has hundreds of the damn things and even more if you're
prepared to take a few moments to customise the software.

I'm yet to find what iTunes doesn't do that Winamp does. The interface
is different and takes a little getting used to I admit.

If you're prepared to spend a small amount of money you can buy one of
the most exciting pieces of audio software for the Windows PC to ever
have been invented on the planet and that's Total Recorder, the player
is incredibly powerful even for the Standard Edition.

And finally, supposing Winamp is a spent force come December 20 then
there's nothing at all stopping anyone from using the software if they
see fit though that may mean that the software won't be able to play any
audio/video formats that come our way in the future.

As I said, much ado about nothing and "Joy To The World" come December
20, so fitting that this event is so close to Christmas Day <smile>.

I don't think you understand; while these players may be accessible, will
they allow one to do _all_ the things that Winamp does? Wil they, for
example, start listening to a file; then you have to stop in the middle;
will they let you go in and pick up right where you left off? Windows
Media
Player won't; at least as far as I know it won't! Can't speak for some of the others as I've not tried them! But this is my concern as I want to be
able to start listening to a show and be able to stop it; then go to the
point where I stopped listening later on! If these other players will do
this easily, fine!

So in other words - if Winamp ceases to exist - its much ado about nothing
given there are alternatives out there.

And by the way the software is called iTunes and not iTunes player.

Maybe that's also why I mentioned the ITunes player, because I don't know
how accessible it is. People mention Fubar, but I've never tried it, so I
don't know how accessible it is compared to Winamp. Maybe the reason are
hooked on Winamp, is because of the Winamp keystrokes that people find
accessible.

Windows Media is pretty accessible. However it still won't allow one to
do
things like going to a specific point in a file, just by typing in a
command
as Winamp does!

I hope you enjoy it.

I also forgot to mention Windows Media Player, there are a few little
things
I don't like about it such as it not having support from FLAC audio for
some
strange reason but the software is very accessible.

Dane, you mentioned about the ITunes media plakyer, but can you access
music content on the web with that as a media player? I don't use
