Hi Yes mum has looked at the settings but she cannot see anything like what you suggest, the tv is literally a year old if not less so but I guess it depends on the make. If we can find an adapter to go from hdmi to scart it would solve all the problems as all the audio could come through the satellite box and we could still hear the tv when dad has headphones on.

If the manual states the phonos are strictly for audio input, then I'm afraid there's nothing he can do. Have you looked at the headphones section of the television manual? Lots of TV's will allow for headphones to be plugged in but also for the main speaker to still work. This is especially beneficial for those with hearing difficulties as the headphone wearer can have their audio as loud as needed but the rest of the family can still rely on the main output. Assuming of course that the headphones have an independent volume control. So maybe a wee look at settings in this area might bare fruit.
