I would say that your observations fit pretty well with mine. The sweet spot for those speakers is definitely seated at your desk with the speakers properly positioned. Also, when not in use, turn them off. If you leave them on, that right speaker will get hot even if you're not using them actively. At least, minded. I have had them for years. It could be they modified something a little bit to make that not happen. I had never seen them in a store, so I can't comment on your perception that they look smaller when you get them home then they did when you saw them in the store.
