I thought pca would be able to pick up the different hosts automatically
without using the actual host name. My thinking was, if I had system1 and
system2's output files in the same location, pca would possibly prompt me
for which system to download patches for.

No, it won't prompt you, you really need to specify a unique prefix to pca's -f option. The only thing pca will ask for interactively is username and/or password when it's instructed to do so, but only for the reason that people might not want to put that information into a configuration file or on the command line.
