Subject: Re: [PCCSC] Stoney Burke Regatta

Unfortunately Long Beach State will not be competing this weekend due to the
air quality. We have gotten an advisory warning from our club sports office
directing us not to attend this weekend.

Best of luck to all of the team this weekend. Stay safe and healthy.

Sincerely,
Julia Jaynes

Hello,

We’ve received concerns regarding the air quality in the Bay Area as we
approach this weekend and the annual Cal Stoney Burke Regatta.

The Department of Recreational Sports and Cal Sport Club administration, in
conjunction with University Health Services, have been monitoring the Air
Quality Index (AQI).

At this time, the Stoney Burke Regatta will continue as planned.

Currently, the AQI for Berkeley is 160 which is in the "Unhealthy" category.
The guidance from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for this index
level is as follows:

  * Sensitive groups: Avoid prolonged or heavy outdoor exertion. Consider
moving activities indoors or rescheduling.
  * Everyone else: Limit prolonged outdoor exertion. Take more breaks during
outdoor activities.

The NCAA Sport Science Institute provides parameters for activities when air
quality is poor, and we are using the recommendations as a guideline. The NCAA
uses a sustained Air Quality Index (AQI) of 200 or above as a threshold to
delay or cancel competition.

On the day of the event, the Cal Sport Club administration will monitor the
AQI. If it reaches 200 or above the event will be canceled.

We will act in the best interest of the health and safety of our of
student-athletes and coaches.

Please reach out with any questions.

Thank you,
