Hello,

I recently acquired my first Mac, a *Black* PowerMac 5500/250 from a
secondhand dealer. Terribly exciting, delving into the 'other side'
since all my other machines are PCs.

But things haven't gone smoothly. Letting the dealer know I was a Mac
newbie probably didn't help, because after a while using Mac OS and
things not quite working the way that LEM was telling me they should, I
realised that I actually had the guts of a 5400/180 and the shell of a
5500/250. Grr.

I took it back and they didn't have any replacement 5500/250
motherboards, they seem pretty rare, but plenty of beige 5500/225s
lying around. So I settled for the motherboard from a 225 in my 250.
Pretty much the same thing, or is it?

At the moment the most alluring thing about my Mac is its video in and
TV capabilities. The 5400/180 motherboard also came from a black
machine (which I believe are only found in the UK and other PAL
territories - I'm in Australia) and played TV from a PAL s-video
source ok. Now I have the beige 5500/225 motherboard and it seems to
only like NTSC input. (I tested this by playing a region 4 (PAL) DVD
and region 1 DVD (NTSC) plugged into the s-video).

Now, if I can't plug in my PAL VCR, PAL N64 or PAL Dreamcast into my
Mac because it wants NTSC input I'm going to be pretty annoyed and
will give up on it and give the machine to a friend who is still doing
her Uni assignments on a Classic, and never use a Mac again, remaining
content with my Intel machines. Please someone, tell me I can flick a
switch or change a setting to get PAL input to work on it? Please?

Thanks,
Toby.
