sounds like the dreaded hell folders. basically the directory info is
corrupt. the is a shareware program called "hell folder" that will let
you delete them, you might also try one of the command line shells for
the mac, i've used one to delete files with odd characters before when
the finder couldn't handle it. in any case you should definitely delete
the file that spawned these folders and download a good copy. you
should also run some drive utilities to make sure the disk isn't too bad
and fix it. if you ignore directory problems they get worse fast, and
you might lose old files if you aren't careful. diskwarrior will
probably also work, but the shareware is allot cheaper. i only use
diskwarrior as a last resort, as it does have some problems with some
drives and formatters. diskwarrior should be used for recovery, imho,
and then a backup made and the drive reformatted if you have to use
diskwarrior. then again, backing up and reformatting is always a good
idea if things get weird, the backup will at least save you if you go on.
you may also have gotten a bad copy of stuffit, or the 6.1 could have
bugs like the original 5.0. it's wise to keep the several older
versions around, as they seem to be trying to make the newer versions
incompatible with files stuffed with the old versions, thus forcing
people to send them more $$$. i've found a number of files that won't
unstuff with 5.x but unstuff flawlessly with 4.5.
