Just to add, I just put a motorola ZIF 466 processor in my Beige G3 233 and it is definitely zero insertion force to put one in. It just fits in real easily; no effort at all. The latch keeps it in there. Apple changed their processor designs in the G3's but you can buy a ZIF adaptor to add a ZIF processor or you can do as I did in my 7300 and add a Sonnet G3 processor that fits nicely into the same slot as your in your 8600 processor. The problem with the ZIF designs is you have to buy the adaptor and the processor so that can add up initially. The Sonnet G3 400/mhz works very well in my 7300. I am pleased and I got a fairly decent deal on a used one. Of course, the Motorola upgrade was better as there is no software requirement ; it will work with OS X automatically since it is an Apple (motorola) Processor. You just put it in and it works like a charm but that's in a G3 already.
