The GeoPort Telecom Adaptor that was use with the earliest PowerMacs (and
pre-PM?) had 9 pins. The ninth was the power pin, as it did not have an
external power supply. I concur, standard 9-pin will work.

However, if you are using a GeoPort Tel Adap and you want to use the same
port for an additional device that has 8-pins, you need something like the
Port Juggler that was manufactured by Momentum, which supports the ninth
pin. I used this on my first Mac, a 6100, for the GeoPort Tel Adap and also
a MIDI interface.

I could have used a different (and cheaper) port expander on the printer
port, but the MIDI required AppleTalk off, yet the LW360 required AppleTalk
on. In those days, everytime you changed the AppleTalk setting you had to
restart. That's a pain when you're creating music you want to print, and it
eats up valuable class time in a school setting.
