Chris,
You could always write down the settings your PC uses, then duplicate them
in the TCP/IP control panel by choosing Manually where it says Configure,
instead of Using DHCP server.
If you buy a router in order to use both 'puters at the same time from one
cable modem IP address, then you will use DHCP. You will have to configure
the router with the settings the cable company gave you. The router then
assigns IP addresses to each device on the network. Be sure your AppleTalk
control panel is set to Ethernet.
By the way, most cable companies don't support home networking because they
would rather sell you a second IP address. So you probably won't get any
help from them when the time comes.
Be sure the router offers a firewall feature. I use a Linksys one-port
router, and my configuration is this:
