I used to work for a major memory supplier in the UK, the advice that
we gave was that gold plated simms should only be used in gold plated
or un-tinned sockets, if the sockets are tinned (most are) then simms
with tinned contacts should be used.
The reasoning was that the tinned contacts could oxidise with time,
and result in a semi-conductor junction instead of a low resistance
contact (gold - tin/lead oxide - tin/lead), however if tinned simms
are used the contacts bite into the tinning and give a good
metal-metal connection.
This advise was also given by Intel with their own brand motherboards.
NB as far as I know no sockets or simms are 'silver', I think you mean
tin/lead.
Ben.
