My $.02 for what it's worth: It's really "tilde" and here's what the dict
says -
Tilde \Til"de\, n. [Sp., fr. L. titulus a superscription, title,
token, sign. See {Title}, n.]
But I agree with you, "squiggly" is a better name, just as "slash" is a
better term than virgule or solidus or separatrix.
