Excellent suggestion that I had overlooked. In this case it had no 
effect on my sound problem, but I had some kind of problem another 
time long ago with sound that your suggestion solved.

I may have to move the AV monitor back just to see if it works as it 
did. I'm not sure I ever used the 7600 without an AV monitor so the 
internal speaker may have been bad along. that doesn't explain why 
the current el cheapo external speakers aren't doing a better job (as 
in barely audible with sound at max).
