why not install 9.x on your hypothetical hd and use it as a sandbox, while
still doing all your work on 8.6? that is what i do: i have all my music
stuff on 8.6, my "main", and i have a second 8.6 drive that kind of mirrors
main, and then a third with 9.1 that i am trying out. however, given that i
am running mainly music apps, i will prolly never upgrade 8.6 permanently.
but i need 9.x for video capture in premiere 6. i have to say, 9.1 is very
good.

System: PowerMac 5500/225; OS 8.6; 8Gb HD; 128Mb RAM.
I am perfectly happy with the above setup, and it is not causing me
any problems. I subscribe to the thought that if it ain't broke then
don't fix it. However, I feel that I must ask the question(s),
"Is there any great need to upgrade to OS 9.x?", "What would I gain?",
and "Would it involve software upgrading?" I know the last part would
depend on what software I have, but in 'general' terms would it entail
software upgrade(s)?
Finally, does my machine allow the fitting of a second hard drive?
