You see the option if either the driver is not installed (if required) or
the interface is not installed (missing card).
You will see the option if the interface is not connected but you won't be
able to use it. Selecting the option will result in an error message and
reverting to the previous configuration or Printer port.

As long as the second machine is started (power on) before the first
machine needs the connection (somewhere around the time the ICONs start
marching across the bottom I think) your okay. When the software checks
the port it is looking for the equivalent of a link light. It doesn't
require another machine to talk to.
