Hey all,
I picked up a LaserWriter Pro 600 this weekend. (Localtalk, Postscript 2,
8mb ram, born in 1993) I've been around Macs for a few years, but I've
never had the opportunity to set up a Laserwriter before. I set it up on a
PM 7500/XLR8 G3 266 running OS 8.6. I currently just use a crossover
ethernet cable to network the 7500 to my G4 tower. After experimenting and
checking out some info on the internet, I downloaded the "LaserWriter
Bridge" control panel so I can use the printer and still communicate between
machines via ethernet. Everything seems to work ok, but I'm asking those of
you more experienced with this than I, if this setup will work OK or am I
heading into some headaches? Some of the information I came across
mentioned hardware solutions to make the LW available to an ethernet
network. They mentioned cost was a deterrent, but the web pages I looked at
appeared to be a few years old so I'm not sure about the cost issues.

*******
Now, just for being curious on my part. Is there a workable solution to get
the LW to work with the G4 directly? (It's a G4/400 "Gigabit" machine.) I
currently have OS 9.2.1/OS X installed on it. I'm thinking that if I could,
it would have to be through ethernet. I'm also thinking what would really
be cool is if a person could use a USB-to-Parallel port adapter to attach to
the LW parallel port. I have an Epson Stylus 850 that I bought such and
adapter kit for. (Too bad Epson isn't making this printer OS X compatible.)
The LW also has a localtalk port and a pc-style serial port. I am guessing
it would be possible to write drivers that would allow the LW to be used
over a USB-to-parallel adapter. Even though there would be no financial
motivation to develop such a driver on Apple's part, it would be fun to
prove it could be done. That said, I'm also a practical person. I have a
setup that appears to work. Heck, I can even call up the LW over my little
ethernet network now and print from the G4. I just get curious about these
things.

Thanks for any info.
Rich
