p.s. weather can have a huge impact on phone lines. they tend to get damp and have problems, sometimes immediately after a rain or snow storm, some times a day or two later. it usually takes several hot days to dry them out. sometimes i have to try 2 or even 6 times to get a good phone line. far away from the phone company, the lines are often multiplexed part of the way and then split out closer to your end and at the phone company. this means you may get a different "slot" or "channel" each time you dial, some good, some bad. the activities of your neighbors may also affect the quality of your phone line. i can often faintly hear other callers on our lines, this is more than enough to disrupt a modem. indeed, with our prior neighbor i often lost my connection shortly after they got home and presumably started making phone calls. she was a state senator and had several phone lines. i've always had better luck at night, particularly late night, when fewer people are using their phone. -- "In Germany they came first for the Communists, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Communist. Then they came for the Jews, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Jew. Then they came for the trade unionists, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a trade unionist. Then they came for the Catholics, and I didn't speak up because I was a Protestant. Then they came for me, and by that time no one was left to speak up." -- Martin Niemller, 1892-1984 (German Lutheran Pastor), on the Nazi Holocaust (sorry, that's an umlaut on the "o") Congressional Record 14th October 1968 p31636. -- PCI-PowerMacs is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
