I understand that some PCI cards perform better in certain PCI slots,
and that "bus mastering" and "PCI bridge" are Concepts That Matter
for peak performance. Can I please get an explanation of these terms
and perhaps some recommendations in the specific context of my 9500?

My 9500 has all six PCI slots filled. All cards function as well as
expected; however, after I buy a Miles2 in my next pay period, I want
to OPTIMIZE the hardware, CLOSE the machine for a LONG while, and
play with recording software INSTEAD of hardware. Uh, sorry, sorry
about the yelling...

The 9500 is equipped in this order:
0 - CPU XLR8 G3-400 (included for clarity)
1 - PCI ATA66 controller: Sonnet Tempo
2 - PCI Video: ATI Rage 3D Pro
3 - PCI Video: ATI Mach 64 (2D)
4 - PCI USB: generic $9 card
5 - PCI Audio: M-Audio Delta IO-2496 SP/DIF
6 - PCI Pentium 233 card: OrangePC 540

Am I making any gross mistakes? Is there a better-performing slot
order for an AUDIO workstation, such as placing the SP/DIF in slot 2
for proximity to CPU, or slot 4 for bus mastering after the bridge?

The SP/DIF card has the highest functional value after the SCSI card,
but its documentation never mentions bus mastering. The OrangePC
documentation specifically says the card performs better as a bus
master, but for me the Pentium card provides the lowest value
functionality. The USB is expendable, and likely will be abandoned to
keep the Sonnet ATA66 for dedicated OrangePC storage.

Pinky, are you pondering what I'm pondering?
1 - Miles2 <--bus master
2 - 3D video
3 - ATA66
4 - SP/DIF <-- bus master
5 - 2D video
6 - OrangePC

Yes, Brain, but shouldn't the SP/DIF card come before the bridge, in
slot 2 or 3?
1 - Miles2 <--bus master
2 - 3D video
3 - SP/DIF
4 - ATA66 <-- bus master
5 - 2D video
6 - OrangePC

Aaargh.

my free 7500 grew up into a 9500, and it's still nickel-and-diming me to death!
