I have the MACh MPe Carrier card and a 400Mhz MACh G4 MPe ZIF; although I
don't have a dual processor setup yet, I plan on it.
The MPe standard allows the G4 chip to use it's native multi processing
signals in relation to other G4s, the G3 does not support multi processing.
Differing speed G4s are supported by the MPe design but I think XLR8 prefers
that you use MPe ZIFs for compatibility. Most ZIF designs are based on the
G3 pinout/sigals, that's why they have released the specs to other companies
to include the extra signals.
My setup:
7300 (180 MHz originally/45MHz bus)
400MHz MACh Carrier MPe
336 Megs of memory (2x 128 sticks and 1x 64 stick)
Sonnet Tempo Ultra ATA 66 PCI card
20 Gig Maxtor Diamond Max Plus 60 ATA 100 hard drive
2 Gig Quantum SCSI II hard drive (original Apple drive)
ATI Radeon Mac Edition (32 Megs DDR)
Apple 17" MutiSync Monitor
12x Internal Apple CD (soon to be IDE DVD)
System 9.2.1
I have tweaked carrier card to 46.2MHz and am running at 415MHz and
increased the cache to 277.2MHz. I have pushed the MHz to 475 but I have had
timing problems with memory. The beauty of the XLR8 carrier card is the
variable bus speeds to tweak the speed for your system.
If you ever intend to run OS X or graphic programs on your system then you
should only consider a G4 ZIF.
I hope I have answered your questions,
John
