OK

My personal experience with drives

On separate occasions ,I purchased three drives, a seagate and two
quantums , all on e-bay. On e-bay there is a dedicated power mac
section where the seller states that all equipments( storage devices in
this case )for bid are mac-compatible. That is, they most likely have
either been removed ( and checked ) from power macs or are new mac OEM
leftovers which implies mac formatted

All my three drives all were recognized by my 7600 on bootup.

What I am trying to say is that whatever source you use to buy a hard
drive, get a guarantee from the seller that the drive is mac
compatible. All mac compatible drives would have been formatted for
macs at the dives factory prior to ship .
Normally, I see no reason for any "user" to ever have to low level
format. That is, unless someone is trying to "pass on" a drive from a PC
machine or ?.

Sit down and calculate the time in hours you have spent on this
"problem". Multiply it by $20/hour and then tell yourself if it was
worth it! Buy "proven/guarantee " mac compatible only!

Of course if you are minimum cost ($) constrained, geek oriented , and
a hardware freak to boot who likes to get his hands on the hardware and
looks forward to unanticipated problems and breakdowns so he/she can
fix it, then forget all that I have said and good luck!

In the mac hardware world there is no free lunch either in time or
dollars
