When I was adminning a Mac lab several years ago at school (in fact, my
introduction to Macs, you can read about it on Low End Mac :)  ), I had a
heck of a time scanning with Virtual Memory turned on. Once I turned VM off,
scanned like a champ with no problem at all.

'tis worth a try at least :)
