Try resetting the modem in the Global Village control panel (can't remember
the name of it -- it's on the home machine, not here at work).

As well, you received a copy of ZTerm with your modem. Launch it and type
ATDT in the terminal, and that should take the modem off the hook so that
you can hear the dialtone (if it's working properly). There are also lists
of AT Commands available online that you can use to reset the modem through
ZTerm as well.
