Right now I have it running on my 8600/300 with 256 meg ram.  It's definitely not 
breaking and speed records but I think more ram might make  it peppier.  Since you're 
used to using Unix (hopefully, not a neounixguruwannabe that uses the gui all  the 
time) it is definitely fast in command line executions.  

As for my comparison to OS 8 and 9, there is non.  At least on this machine, speed 
wise, OS 9 blows OS X away.
