In the case of a cable modem, the limiting factor is the speed of the 
modem, not the Ethernet connection.   For a practical matter, you 
want to have the modem co-located with the computer you are going to 
use it with.   If you have any problems with the cable connection, 
one of things you have to do is to power down the modem then power it 
back up.   If the computer is up stairs and the modem is down stairs, 
this will become a real hassle.

FWIW, most cable modems are capped at a download speed of at the very 
most 3 Mb (3 Mega bits) and more often 1.5 Mb per second, while the 
slowest Ethernet is running at 10 Mb per second.
