Thanks, Ken for telling me about "Sleeper"--what a nifty
program! It has a lot more features than Energy Saver and
I can solve the power-down problem a couple of different
ways using it.

I'd still like to know if there's a way I can set the
jumper settings on the drive to begin with, so that it
doesn't power up on startup unless called upon. Where would I find
out about this? (I do have info from the drive manufacturer about
which settings are which, I just don't know what they mean!)
