Thanks to all who advised on this.
I will try to fix it manually first - look at the pins, see if I can do
anything. I am fairly certain that the soldered connections, motherboard
connections, etc, are OK - this is a problem right at the connector itself.
If that fails, the easiest way to do it is through a hardware
Ethernet/localtalk bridge, assuming I can find one cheaply. I'll need a hub,
I think - the computer is already on an Ethernet network, so the line coming
from the remote main switch needs to be split to go both  to the bridge and
the computer. I wonder if I could do it by putting a second Ethernet card in
the 8600 instead of using a hub.
But first, I am going on a long-awaited week-long vacation starting
Saturday, so all this will have to wait until November 5, when I get back.
