If I recall correctly, that version of Office contain Word 6.x, which 
has a known incompatibility with modern OS's (e.g. it don't work). If 
you are running 9.x or above, you will have to upgrade to Office 98 
or 2001. Other than that issue, I can't think of any reason why this 
would behave this way.
