Thanks for all the info. I should have been more specific.
The 5300/100 (603e) with 256k L2 cache, has 64MB of RAM, is currently
running OS 8.1 and does not have Ethernet. I should also mention that I am
extremely "thrifty" (i.e., cheap) and, as such, did not want to buy a 10BT
Ethernet card for the 5300 if the DSL connection wasn't going to work
anyway. But halfway thru my penny- (actually lira-) pinching considerations,
I thought that maybe Ethernet on the 5300 would be nice anyway, regardless
of the DSL.

As to same, are there 2 different types of cards available? Some have
mentioned a CommSlot card, while I'm sure I've seen PDS slot cards for sale.
Any recommendations? Are there any 10/100 cards available in either of these
formats? Would the 5300 be able to take advantage of the 100BT speed, i.e.
on our home network with a Yosemite and a Lombard, and/or with the DSL
connection?

As to system speed, the 5300 is already slow enough with OS 8.1, so I can't
imagine 9.1. It currently gets used for writing (Word 5.1a), often while one
listens to music CDs, and for messing around with Kid Pix Deluxe; also
serves as dedicated floppy mule for our other Macs, via external Zip drive,
and we print from it to a serial-port Laserwriter. All this from a Mac that
cost the bargain price of about $1100 six short years ago.

I had thought of using it on the network as our floppy/SCSI/serial mule, as
I'd found some deals on good used SCSI and serial peripherals (e.g.,
Powerlook II scanner, Yamaha 16x10x40x CDRW and Epson Photo 700 printer),
but in the meantime I've found even /better/ deals on a new USB Epson 5700
laser printer, Epson 1640 scanner and Epson Photo 875 printer, as well as an
external Firewire case to hold a cheapo 16x10x40x CDRW (e.g. Lite-On). And
now I've been second-guessing myself. Though that's not all bad.
