Listers, I think I may have found the problem. I followed the link below posted by James S. Jones in a slightly different thread.

The previous owner must have done a clean install of OS 9.1 and the model specific extensions were lost. If anybody with an 8500 could copy the following extensions and mail them to me off list I would be very grateful: -SystemAV -PowerPC Monitors Extension Rich.
