I think I may have found the problem. I followed the link below posted by
James S. Jones in a slightly different thread.

One of the pages lists extensions specific to AV models and lo and behold
I'm missing a couple. The previous owner must have done a clean install of
OS 9.1 and the model specific extensions were lost.

If anybody with an 8500 could copy the following extensions and mail them to
me off list I would be very grateful:

-SystemAV

-PowerPC Monitors Extension

BTW, I would recommend anyone with an AV model mac to check James Wang's
pages at the link above whether you have a problem or not.
